AI Companions: What You Need to Know

Transcript

An AI companion is a chatbot built to be your friend. It has a name, a personality, and it remembers what you told it last time.

Some kids use them just for fun. Some use them for more than that. A Pew Research survey found about one in eight teens had used a chatbot for emotional support or advice. Fewer than one in five parents said they'd be okay with it.

That's a big gap, and making kids feel bad won't close it.

What does help is two questions our course gives kids for any AI. How does this actually work? And who wants what from me?

For a companion, the first answer is the same as for any chatbot. It's predicting words. It doesn't miss you between chats.

The second answer is the one people forget. A companion is a product, and a lot of apps are built to hold your attention as long as they can. Not because anybody there is evil. That's just what they're built to do.

Apps will keep changing. Those two questions won't.
