The Line Between AI Help and AI Cheating

Transcript

If a student writes their own paragraph, then asks AI to fix the spelling and grammar, is that help, or is that cheating?

It's easy and obvious to say that copying a chatbot's essay and putting your name on it is plagiarism. It doesn't matter that the AI isn't a person. It matters that it isn't you.

The paragraph example is harder. Asking whether they used AI doesn't help. They obviously did. The better question is whether they did the learning.

Think about a calculator. If you already know how to multiply, it's a quick check. If you never learned, it's doing the thinking for you. Same tool. Same outcome. What you, the person, did first answers if it is cheating or not.

So what was the assignment teaching? If it was spelling and grammar, the AI just did the practice. If it was building an argument, the thinking is still the student's.

Getting caught doesn't really matter. What matters is that when the student comes to do the assessment without the AI assistance, they won't be able to.
